The US and India launched a new initiative to increase tree coverage in India. What can each of us do?

US and India

The US and India announced a new initiative to increase tree coverage outside of forest lands in India in a bid to support global climate change mitigation and adaptation goals. The Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change, the Government of India, and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) announced on September 8, 2022, the launch of a new program, “Trees Outside Forests in India, Through Agroforestry, or Integrating Trees into Farming Systems.

In addition to safeguarding India’s forests and other critical ecosystems, USAID is working with India to implement its ambitious emissions reduction measures by transitioning to renewable energy and adapting ongoing activities, such as health and disaster risk reduction, to the reality of today’s climate crisis.

The programme is implemented in 7 states, namely, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, by a consortium led by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF). According to ANI, the USD 25 million initiative aims to expand tree coverage by 28 lakh hectares (outside traditional forests) through agroforestry or by integrating trees into farming systems.

What can we do with this initiative?

Preventing deforestation is in our hands by taking simple, everyday actions. As citizens of India, we can follow these steps for afforestation in India.

  • Reduce deforestation : India’s forests are home to about 80% of its biodiversity. But they have been under threat due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. To protect them, we need to reduce deforestation. We should focus on reducing the demand for non-forest products, especially those that require cutting down trees.
  • Stop illegal logging : Illegal logging is rampant in India. In fact, India loses over $10 billion annually to illegal logging. Illegal loggers cut down trees without permission, often using explosives to clear land for plantations. These activities destroy our forests and contribute to climate change.
  • Changing Lifestyle : Every action and movement we make on a daily basis has a different impact on the environment. Although we may not be aware of it, turning on the tap and using wooden home decor products, not recycling or always leaving the light on can have harmful consequences for our planet. The time has come to give nature its due and pay more attention to it. Steel and stainless steel Home decor products: do not cut any trees to make your home decor. Besides, these products would be 100 percent recyclable when you chose to replace them. Bethliving.com is one of the best companies when it comes to Steel & Stainless Steel Home Interior. Manufactured out of a process that is eco-friendly and causes the least disturbance to the environment, there cannot be a better way to take care of Mother Earth. Let’s remember that not cutting a tree is far better than planting 100 of them.
  • Protect wildlife habitats : Wildlife habitat protection is critical for many species, including tigers, elephants, rhinos, and leopards. Habitat loss is a major cause of population decline for these animals. We should ensure that protected areas are adequately funded and enforced.
  • Create awareness campaigns : We need to educate people about the importance of forests and how they benefit us. We should use social media platforms to spread information about environmental issues and encourage people to take action.

Conclusion

Although the steps are simple, it is still great to be able to make a choice that helps the environment and makes the world more sustainable.
